“I’m a shrinking violet really!”

Cuddly Michael Laws is perched on a couch sipping a matcha latte, as he confides to No Idea Monthly his reluctance to re-enter the fray of politics.

The exclusive interview comes hot on the heels of Michael’s announcement that he’ll be standing as a candidate for New Zealand First, as he reveals his hesitancy in stepping back into the public arena.

“To be honest I’m always happiest keeping my head down, doing the hard mahi and letting others take the credit. The cut-and-thrust world of politics, with all those big egos – I never felt I fitted in”.

Michael confides that he only stepped up when others pressed him to throw his hat into the ring for the good of the country.

“You know how the saying goes: some are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them. I don’t know which of those applies to me – maybe both – but I’ve never been one for the limelight. Gosh, I don’t even like the sound of my own voice!”

“But if there’s one thing that the years behind the microphone on The Platform with Sean Plunket has taught me, it’s that what this country needs is more kindness and tolerance. And when it comes to kindness and tolerance, I’m a giver!”

Despite his self-doubt, Michael thinks he’ll fit in well with New Zealand First’s duo of big swinging dicks, Winston Peters and Shane Jones.

“Some people say I’ll be a rose between two thorns” Michael chuckles. “Or even an orchid between two pricks!”
