Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters says he will have reached a final decision on recognising Palestinian statehood by the time the world’s TV cameras are pointing at him this weekend.
Cabinet has made an in-principle decision on the matter and reporters have pressed Mr Peters on why it has not been announced yet. But the Foreign Affairs Minister pushed back:
“Now look here bozo, this is a serious and complex matter. I’ll announce what New Zealand’s position is on recognising Palestine at the right and proper time, and not a minute before. And that right and proper time will only be when I’ve thoroughly canvassed the matter and given it serious thought and consideration.”
‘And if it just so happens that I finish giving it serious thought and consideration at exactly the time I’m standing at the podium on the world stage at the United Nations on Saturday morning NZ time, with all the lights and cameras on me, in a way that showcases my statesmanship and that will end on up high-rotate in the run-up to the next election, then so be it. You got a problem with that, sunshine?’
