‘Trade Minister Todd McClay had to apologise to Parliament after shouting “you’re not in Mexico now” at Green MP Ricardo Menendez March’ - Stuff
Minister McClay, welcome. Is this true?
It’s absolutely true and I don’t deny it.
Would you like to explain?
Certainly. Mexico is a sovereign state within the North American continent. At the time I spoke, Mr Menendez March was, and indeed still is, in Wellington in the southern hemisphere, more than eleven thousand kilometres outside the borders of Mexico. So obviously Mr Menendez March was not, and is not, in Mexico now. Hope that clears things up.
That’s certainly very detailed.
Well when you’re trade minister it pays to know one country from another. Otherwise you end up mixing up your Turkmenistan and your Turkey.
I believe it’s called Türkiye now.
is it? Bugger.
Speaking of turkeys, when I asked ‘Would you like to explain’, I meant would you like to explain your behaviour.
Explain saying something true? That sounds rather woke on your part.
Well, I understand you did withdraw and apologise.
Yes, after the Speaker asked me to withdraw and apologise.
So what did you say?
‘I withdraw and apologise’
Not exactly a fulsome apology…
Okay okay! I made a mistake. I’m a human and I made a mistake. I should not have said ‘You’re not in Mexico’. There. Are you happy?
That certainly is a relief to hear. Well, thanks Minister -
It’s just that he obviously reminds me of a young Doctor Ropata.
Wait. What. Pardon?
